Nina K. Thomas, Ph.D., ABPP, CGP
Providing individual, couples, group and family psychotherapy as well as training and supervision groups for professionals. I work with a wide range of emotional and behavioral issues providing services that span therapy for depression and parenting support, couples counseling and beyond. While undertaking psychotherapy can be a challenge, I attempt to create an environment in which over time you will feel supported in your efforts to achieve better personal understanding from which to change the circumstances in your life that cause difficulties.
Treatment specialization includes
At various points in our lives we face challenges for which another perspective can help. Very often we may find ourselves running the same loop through our minds and not being able to find a way out of it. In talking through whatever it is we may be facing we can achieve a better understanding of how we come to stand in our own way or may be unable to use our skills to the best advantage. In addition, we may be coping with traumas that have kept us frozen, whether they are our own or family illnesses, loss, or specific events that we find ourselves unable to manage our reactions to. Working with people who have faced such traumas is an area of specialty for me, something I have taught and written about for more than 20 years.
Working in a group allows for sharing experiences with others and learning from one another in the framework of a safe environment in which to address the issues that stand in your way, whether in family or work setting. Whether in combination with individual psychotherapy with me or with another therapist, or after a period of work in individual psychotherapy at another time, group therapy has been found to be a valuable adjunctive treatment modality through which to enhance your self-esteem, self-expression and experience of being helpful to others.
Couples counseling is designed to enrich the communication between you and your partner and overcome the impediments to intimacy that may have arisen in the course of your relationship. I have more than 20 years experience in working with couples whose relationships span everywhere from on the brink of marriage to 30 years duration and more.
In today’s difficult world parents are continually challenged to be able to provide for, protect and nurture their children while managing the often chaotic demands placed on them as individuals, spouses and parents. The ever-increasing use of technology both eases and complicates our own lives and those of our children as experiences of cyber-bullying make abundantly clear. Therapy that supports parents through these difficult times can enable you to provide a calmer environment both for yourselves and your children.
Work and Stress Management
We all know that balancing work and personal life is difficult to achieve in today’s “multi-tasking,” “hyper-achieving” environment. Being able to set priorities so that we can experience satisfaction with who we are and how we live is essential to our physical as well as emotional health. Studies repeatedly show that our physical health is directly effected by how we manage stress, whether we are talking about cardiac health or the state of our immune system. When we have better balance in our lives we also have better health in general. In talking through the challenges we face we are in a better position to achieve just that kind of healthy lifestyle.
Professional Consultation and Study Groups
I have served on the faculty both at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis as well as the faculty of the Center for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy of New Jersey since 1995, teaching courses on trauma and on working with countertransference. I have supervised graduate students, psychoanalytic candidates and private practitioners for many years and run a supervision group for more than ten years.
